π About the Fishery
Island Lake at Theale Fisheries has become one of Berkshireβs most popular small-water carp venues and is widely respected amongst anglers looking for quality carp fishing within peaceful surroundings. Situated close to Reading alongside the River Kennet, the lake combines mature natural features with controlled angling pressure, creating an excellent balance between accessibility and rewarding carp fishing.
The intimate 2.8-acre gravel pit is centred around a large island and surrounded by reed-fringed margins, overhanging bushes, and natural cover that regularly hold feeding carp. Although compact in size, Island Lake offers far more technical fishing than many heavily stocked commercial fisheries. Accurate casting, quiet approaches, and careful bait placement are often the difference between success and failure on this venue.
Theale Fisheries intentionally limits angling pressure by allowing a maximum of eight session anglers and two daylight anglers on the lake at any one time. This lower-stock-pressure approach has helped maintain excellent fish condition while also creating a quieter and more enjoyable fishing experience. Purpose-built swims positioned around the lake provide access to island margins, weed beds, patrol routes, and bubbling areas where carp are regularly seen feeding.
One of the major attractions of Island Lake is its year-round consistency. Fish are regularly caught during winter conditions, even when parts of the venue freeze over. This has helped establish the lake as a reliable choice for anglers seeking action throughout all four seasons.
π Fish Stock
Island Lake currently contains an estimated stock of around 150 carp including mirrors, commons, and several larger specimen fish. The lake record currently stands at 35lb 8oz, while more than sixty-five different twenty-pound carp have been recorded since catch records were restarted in 2022. Many of the remaining fish are upper doubles, providing excellent action alongside genuine specimen potential.
The carp are known for their dark colours, immaculate condition, and strong fighting ability due to the natural environment and low stocking density. Fish patrol close to island margins, reed beds, and weed growth throughout the warmer months, making visual fishing and accurate presentation particularly important.
π― Tactics & Methods
Island Lake rewards anglers who fish quietly and stay mobile. The most productive tactics often involve targeting showing fish close to island margins, weed beds, or bubbling feeding areas. Solid PVA bags, small boilie traps, wafters, and balanced bottom baits all perform consistently throughout the year.
Margin fishing can be particularly effective due to the lakeβs overhanging bushes and reed-lined edges. Many successful anglers prefer light baiting approaches rather than heavy spodding, especially during periods of high angling pressure. Watching the water carefully before setting up is often key to locating feeding fish.
During warmer weather, fish frequently patrol the island edges and shallow areas, while colder temperatures often push carp towards deeper central sections of the lake. Anglers regularly report success using subtle presentations combined with accurate casting to patrol routes.

βΉοΈ Facilities & Notes
Theale Fisheries operates strict fish care policies throughout Island Lake. The venue is fully otter fenced and anglers are required to disinfect landing nets, slings, mats, and buckets using the on-site dip tank before entering the lake area. These procedures help protect the fish stock from disease and maintain the fisheryβs excellent standards.
The lake includes fifteen purpose-built swims, secure access, maintained pathways, and online advance booking systems. No tickets are sold on the bank, and all sessions must be booked before arrival. The venue also offers exclusive lake bookings for groups and private sessions.
