📋 About the Fishery

Horseshoe Lake is one of the most iconic and historically important carp fisheries in the United Kingdom. Owned and controlled by The Carp Society, the venue is situated within the Cotswold Water Park in Gloucestershire and has become legendary amongst carp anglers over several decades. The lake has played a major role in the history of modern carp fishing and remains one of the country’s most respected members-only carp waters.

Originally formed through gravel extraction, Horseshoe Lake matured into a rich natural environment with extensive weed growth, gravel bars, reed-lined margins, overhanging trees, deep channels, and large open-water areas. Covering approximately 55 acres, the venue offers a true big-lake carp fishing experience where watercraft and fish location are essential for success.

The lake rose to national fame during the 1980s and 1990s when several record-breaking carp were captured from the venue, helping establish Horseshoe as one of the most influential waters in British carp fishing history. Many famous carp anglers have fished the lake over the years, and it continues to attract serious specimen hunters looking to target old, powerful carp within a challenging natural environment.

Unlike heavily stocked commercial day-ticket venues, Horseshoe Lake maintains a more traditional syndicate atmosphere with lower angling pressure and carefully controlled membership through The Carp Society. This helps preserve both the quality of fishing and the long-term welfare of the fish stock.

🐟 Fish Stock

Horseshoe Lake contains a strong head of specimen mirror and common carp with numerous fish exceeding 30lb and several larger residents capable of reaching well beyond the 40lb mark. Many of the carp are historic original fish that have lived within the lake for years, giving the venue huge appeal amongst dedicated big carp anglers.

The fish are known for their dark colouring, incredible condition, and immense fighting strength due to the lake’s size and natural environment. Alongside the carp stock, the venue also contains pike, tench, bream, perch, and silver fish which contribute to a healthy ecosystem and natural food chain.

Success on Horseshoe Lake often depends on mobility, observation, and understanding fish movement throughout the seasons. The carp regularly patrol large areas of the lake and can often be located through showing fish, bubbling activity, or subtle signs around weed beds and marginal features.

Popular tactics include boilie fishing to gravel spots, solid PVA bag presentations, zig rigs during warmer conditions, and subtle single-hookbait approaches when fish are under pressure. Accurate baiting to clear spots within weed growth can produce excellent results, while overbaiting is often avoided by experienced members.

During spring and autumn, fish movement around shallower plateaus and bars can create outstanding opportunities for anglers willing to stay mobile and adapt to changing conditions.

Access to Horseshoe Lake is available through membership with The Carp Society. Membership demand is extremely high due to the venue’s reputation and historical status within UK carp fishing. The lake operates under strict fishery rules focused heavily on fish welfare, responsible angling, and maintaining the quality of the venue.

The fishery includes secure parking, maintained swims, gated access, and controlled angling pressure throughout the year. Members are expected to follow strict carp care procedures at all times.
