About Tar Farm Lake No. 4
Tar Farm Lake No. 4 is part of the Tar Farm complex operated by Linear Fisheries in Oxfordshire.
At around 12 acres, it is the largest of the Tar Farm lakes and has just seven fishing pegs,
giving anglers plenty of water to fish from each swim.
The lake is fishable from one bank only, with the opposite bank being out of bounds and left
largely for wildlife and nature. This gives the lake a very natural feel and also means anglers
need to think carefully about watercraft, fish location and the areas available from their chosen peg.
One of the biggest attractions of Tar Farm Lake No. 4 is the range of fishing available.
Depending on the swim, anglers can fish short, medium and genuine long-distance areas.
With a current lake record of 42lb 4oz, Tar Farm Lake No. 4 is capable of producing some very
good carp and is an attractive option for anglers looking for a day-ticket water with the chance
of a large fish.
Fish Stock
Linear Fisheries initially stocked around 450 carp into Tar Farm Lake No. 4.
The stocking programme was made up of a mixture of different year classes and sizes,
including fish in the 6–10lb and 10–14lb ranges, along with around 130 fish over 14lb.
The initial stocking also included a selection of 20lb carp and fish reaching just over 30lb.
Across the whole Tar Farm complex, Linear stocked around 2,000 carp, with the stocking policy
continuing to develop as the waters mature.
As with any fishery, fish stocks and weights can change over time, so anglers should always
check the latest information with Linear Fisheries before fishing.
Tar Farm Lake No. 4 also contains other species including pike, perch, roach, rudd, tench
and crucian carp.
Tactics & Methods
Tar Farm Lake No. 4 gives anglers a good choice of approaches because of the variation in
depths and the different ranges available from the pegs.
The first thing I would do on arrival is spend some time looking for signs of carp before
deciding where to put the rods. With only seven pegs and plenty of water available, locating
the fish can be more important than simply fishing at maximum range.
Shorter-range areas, margins and any obvious features should all be investigated. At longer
range, accurate casting and good bait presentation can be particularly important when fishing
to areas that show signs of carp activity.
Boilies & PVA
Good quality boilies are a sensible starting point on the Tar Farm waters. A single hookbait
can be worth trying when carp are showing or moving around the lake, while PVA bags can be
useful when you want to put a small amount of attractive bait tightly around the hookbait.
Particles & Spod Mixes
Linear Fisheries reports that particle baits such as tiger nuts and maize or sweetcorn have
accounted for plenty of carp on its waters when fished correctly.
A spod or particle approach can therefore be worth considering if the carp are feeding
confidently, particularly when you have located an area where fish are regularly visiting.
Always make sure particles and nuts are prepared correctly.
Zig & Surface Fishing
During the warmer months, don’t overlook zigs or surface fishing. Linear Fisheries states that
surface and zig-rig fishing can account for carp across its complex, particularly when conditions
are right.

Seasonal Carp Fishing at Tar Farm Lake No. 4
Spring
As the water begins to warm, look for areas where carp are starting to become more active.
Sunny margins and shallower areas can become increasingly attractive, while singles, small
PVA bags and small amounts of bait can be a good way of starting a session.
Summer
Summer gives anglers plenty of options. Carp can spread around the lake and may respond well
to boilies, particles and spod mixes. Zigs and surface fishing should also be considered when
conditions are suitable.
Autumn
Autumn can be an excellent time to target the larger carp as fish often feed more confidently
before the colder weather arrives. Finding feeding areas and building a swim carefully can pay
dividends.
Winter
Tar Farm Lake No. 4 remains fishable through the winter as Linear Fisheries operates no close
season on its lakes. In colder conditions, a more careful approach with singles, small PVA bags
and accurate presentation can be worth considering.
