Homemade carp boilie base mix ready for rolling
My homemade boilie base mix ready to be rolled into carp baits.

Introduction

Have you ever wanted to make your own boilie base mixes? In this article, I will teach you how to make your own boilie base mixes using my recipes, which are inexpensive to make to suit all budgets, easy to roll into your own boilie baits at home and, most importantly, tried and tested over the years by me, which have caught loads of carp, but will also work equally for barbel and catfish etc.

The 50/50 Foundation Base Mix

This will be your basic 50/50 revised base mix.

It’s revised as I have added some extra ingredients to improve it slightly. We will call it our Foundation Base Mix, which can be used successfully on its own, or we can hybrid it to make other mixes once we get into the article more.

That’s the brilliant thing about the 50/50 Foundation Mix: it’s so versatile and can save you buying loads of ingredients, saving space and money!

The 50/50 Foundation Mix Recipe

1kg mix

Semolina – 400 g

Soya flour – 400 g

Maize flour – 100 g

Calflac milk powder – 100 g

That’s the 50/50 Foundation Mix, so simple to make, and it will catch carp. Some anglers may say it’s not nutritional etc., but believe me, carp love it, especially if you add the right flavours and attraction etc.

Fishmeal Base Mix

Let’s get into our next base mix. This will be our fishmeal mix, so simple to make now we have the 50/50 Foundation Mix.

Fishmeal Base Mix Recipe

50/50 Foundation Base Mix – 700 g

Sardine and Anchovy Fishmeal – 300 g

That’s it, the mix is finished. It’s that simple. You now have a fishmeal base mix which will work brilliantly to catch fish! You may also use a different fishmeal if you like there are many to choose from. Sardine and Anchovy is just one of my favourite budget ones!

Nut and Birdfood Base Mix

OK, let’s make a final mix. This will be a birdfood nut bait which carp love, and thousands of carp anglers will use in a different format.

Nut and Birdfood Base Mix Recipe

50/50 Foundation Mix – 700 g

C.L.O – 100 g

Meggablend – 50 g

Tigernut meal – 100 g

Tigernut flour – 50 g

The Nut and Birdfood Base Mix will roll very well and again the carp will love to eat it. I have caught a fair few carp on it from some tricky lakes.

Flavours and Attractors

Next step to get you started: I will give you a few flavours and attractors you may add to each recipe.

500 g 50/50 Foundation Mix

20 ml Nutramino

4 ml Pineapple Nature Identical Flavour

4 ml Banana Nature Identical Flavour

1 ml Talin

This combination has been recommended by Nutrabaits and is highly successful. I have used it myself on a local park lake and caught carp to over 30 lb!

500 g Fishmeal Base Mix Recipe

2 ml John Baker Plum

2 ml John Baker Ala Salar

15 ml John Baker Salmon Oil

1 ml Talin

The above recipe I have used from John Baker’s flavour range, as he’s one of the best in the country. I’ve caught my fair share using this recipe. John’s also a highly respected carp angler and an angler I also respect highly myself.

The Talin sweetener can be purchased online. I will list it in the last section.

500 g Nut and Birdfood Base Mix

1 ml John Baker Butterscotch TM2

2 ml John Baker Milky 1

20 ml Nutramino (Nutrabaits)

1 ml Talin

As you can see above, using two of my top recommended companies, which I am not affiliated with in any way, they are just ones I would highly recommend. Nashbait was another, but unfortunately they are no longer trading.

Flavour Levels

Please, when adding flavour, never think more is better. It is simply not. It can actually repel the carp!

Always follow the manufacturer’s recommended flavour levels. Personally, I would stick to the lower end or middle range.

If adding 2 flavours, remember to add half the dose to each flavour. The more flavours you have, the further you must reduce each dosage. Hope that makes sense. Any questions, please drop me a message. I will be sure to help as much as I can.

Ingredients

You’re probably thinking, where can I buy the ingredients for the recipes I personally use? AA Baits, Target Baits, Nutrabaits, John Baker, and I source many other ingredients via Google etc.

Final Thoughts

Really hope you have learnt something about building a boilie base mix, and if you use mine, I’m sure you will have some great results. It’s truly another hobby, making fishing bait. I’ve been doing it for over 30 years!
